Margaret Harlan-Chair of Baton Rouge is the winner of our Groundhog Day contest! Congrats to Margaret, and thanks to all who entered – and a special thanks to those who shared pictures of their projects with us!

As promised, here is a favorite, easy to make chocolate cake recipe that’s been a staple in my family since I was a little girl. It was most likely the first cake I ever made! It’s a rich dark cake that takes no eggs. Growing up, it was everyone’s favorite cake – especially with peanut butter frosting!

Carolyn’s Chocolate Cake

3 Cups flour

6 Tablespoons cocoa

2 Cups Sugar

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 teaspoons vineagar

2/3 Cup vegetable oil

2 Cups water

Combine all ingredients in large bowl and beat on medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth – about 2 minutes. Fill cupcake tins (lined with paper cups) approx. 2/3 full. Bake at 350 degrees about 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted into cupcake comes out clean.  Cool, then frost with favorite frosting, or dust with confectioners sugar.

Can also bake in 13 x 9″ pan or two 9″ round pans.

Now, onto making our Groundhog Cupcakes!

All you need are some vanilla wafers, a few chocolate chips, and some sliced almonds!

First, melt a few chocolate chips in the microwave for a few seconds until they are the consistency of glue. Using a toothpick, smear a little melted chocolate on the back of two almond slices and “glue” onto the back of each vanilla wafer as shown.

Then, draw the groundhog faces on the front of the wafers using the melted chocolate and the toothpick. Stick the wafers into the tops of the cupcakes – and there you have it! Great fun for the kiddies to make!

It happens every year, just when we are UP TO HERE with winter weather, our good ole’ buddy Punxsutawney Phil wakes up from a luxurious nap to remind us that sooner or later, Spring IS coming.

Punxsutawney Phil

Now being from Pennsylvania, I KNOW our Phil is the REAL Groundhog Day groundhog, but I’ve heard some places in other parts of the country have their critter of choice predict the weather…. so let’s hear about your traditions, and enter to win Andover Fat Quarter Collections valued at $100! All you have to do is “like” us on Facebook if you haven’t already, and predict whether or not my buddy Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow! You have to hurry, as the contest closes @ 11:59PM on Feb 1. Prize winners will be randomly selected from among those who make the correct prediction. And just to sweeten the pot – if you post pictures of your latest project using Andover Fabrics (what better way to get through the winter doldrums!) I’ll double the prize!!! Gee I’m thinking “Sunshine and Shadow” quilts would be appropriate……. Oh and I’m making Groundhog cupcakes later….and will post the recipe and pictures…. this involves chocolate you know……. http://www.facebook.com/andoverfabrics

Lonni Rossi’s One Woman Show!!

ART QUILTS ETCETERA: Lonni Rossi Exhibit
by Lonni Rossi Fabrics on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 4:11pm

PRESS RELEASE

Ardmore, PA—Internationally known and local fiber artist, Lonni Rossi, has announced the dates for an upcoming one-woman show of her unusual artquilts and custom painted fabrics. The exhibit –ART QUILTS ETCETERA: LONNI ROSSI– will open on Sunday, December 19, from 4:30 – 6:00 PM—with a reception in the Gallery of Waverly Heights located in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. These are not your grandmother’s quilts–these quilts are meant to hang as paintings in fabric and thread. The art is suitable for private homes as well as corporate offices and public spaces. The exhibit contains more than thirty examples of Ms.Rossi’s work, mostly art quilts that are heavily machine embroidered, stitched and quilted, embellished with Angelina fibers and “threadpainted” to achieve depth of color and texture with many types of thread. Custom painted yardage of silks, linens and cottons will also be on display. All the works are for sale and part of the proceeds will be donated back to the Waverly Heights Retirement Community. Ms. Rossi’s work is all about color and texture, a visual exploration this artist has pursued in her fabric design and quilt work for many years. She is drawn to elements and motifs from Nature, and uses those graphics in a bold way. Her color sense is the element most often remarked upon by those viewing her art quilts and fabrics. On January 16, 2011 at 3 PM Lonni Rossi will present a lecture and artist tour of her exhibit. Fiber enthusiasts will enjoy her detailed and sometimes humorous accounts of what inspires her and how she achieves the textures in her quilts and fabrics. Please call the Waverly Heights main number for exact times to view the exhibit and to R.S.V.P. for the January lecture. Urban Shades by Lonni Rossi

“Urban Shades” is the newest fabric collection from Lonni Rossi and is also the name of a beautiful new free-to-use quilt design!  Influenced by textures found in the city, Lonni added a bit of copper accent to some of these fabrics.

This quilt designed by Lonni is 59″ x 68″ and is shown in the three colorways — which one will your customers love?
The kitting sheet for the “Urban Shades” quilt also shows coordinates used in the quilt from other fabric groups by Lonni — “Little Lonni’s” and “Petals.”  Check your stock to see which of these basics you need for kitting this great design!

See the “Urban Shades” collection on Andover’s website at http://www.andoverfabrics.com/Grid.php?GroupName=Urban Shades

FALL 2011

Hello Everyone …
As a designer for Andover Fabrics, I’m working a year in advance to develop exciting new fabrics & quilt patterns.

For over 15 years I’ve been publishing a series of very popular books with quilt patterns, hooked rugs, wool applique, home decorating items, etc. … I’ve called them THREADS … each book with a theme … a season or holiday or simply French. The good news is that in 2011, there will be a new Pumpkin Patch Threads book. The Pumpkin Patch quilt uses a mix of yarn-dyed wovens & prints, many of which are my Itsy Bits “basics” & even prints designed by my friend Jo Morton. The quilt has wool-on-cotton applique pumpkins, acorns & leaves.
You are going to love it! This quilt is a classic! The colors are much more rich & vibrant than these photos show. We’re currently photographing all the great projects for the new book.

Queen Size Pumpkin Patch

Even better news … I have 12 new wovens coming in 2011 — Pumpkin Patch Plaids!

Pumpkin Patch Plaids

My new Need’l Love wools will also be available in early 2011 … YES 18 NEW and long awaited 100% wool plaids!

It’s going to be an exciting year! As for this fall, Happy Thanksgiving to all.
